The gallery of children's art, age range Kindergarten through Grade five, changes three times a year. The focus for May 2009, gallery of art work will be trains. Children at each grade level will see art work and posters of trains showing the changes through the last 100 years. Children will create art work depicting trains which will be displayed in the gallery. The museum is directly adjacent to the railroad tracks and Naperville train station and many families use the train to access the museum so this is of particular interest to many of our patrons.

Today, Chicagoans remember Joy Morton as the man who sold salt and planted trees. Few realize the significant role he played in developing the 1909 Plan of Chicago. A long-time member of the Commercial Club of Chicago, Morton served on its Executive Committee, chaired its important committee on railway terminals, and joined other members of the Commercial Club in backing up the Plan’s rhetoric with his own money and influence.

Interurban Trains & Tourism: Reclaiming the Past for the Future

The exhibit features the original paintings commissioned in the late 1920's to promote tourism and economic development between Chicago and South Bend. These paintings, developed as a line of posters commonly known as South Shore Posters, are beautiful examples of vintage artwork portraying the early 20th century boom of Northwest Indiana. In addition there will be an expansive oil painting of the path from the Chicago area to the Michigan City, Indiana site of the CHicago South Shore & South Shore freight.

Daniel Burnham in the Philippines

In the winter of 1904-1905, Chicago architect and future co-author of the Plan of Chicago Daniel Burnham traveled to the Philippines. He had won a commission from the United States government to develop a new city plan for Manila, the capital of the Philippines, and to create a city plan for a completely new "summer capital," Baguio City, 155 miles to the north of Manila and 5,000 feet above sea level in the mountains of Luzon. The United States gained possession of the Philippines in 1898 as part of its treaty with Spain at the end of the Spanish American War

As part of the regionwide, centennial celebration of Burnham's 1909 Plan of Chicago, this new exhibit examines the 1922 Plan of Wilmette. Following Burnham's work, Wilmette's Plan considered issues such as open spaces, zoning regulations, street lighting, and transportation, especially the idea of elevating the railroad tracks along Green Bay Road. The exhibit, which will include blueprints, sketches, manuscript and archival material, and photographs, will document Burnham's relationship with the University a few blocks from his Evanston home. Burnham received his first honorary degree here (1895), and his firm submitted proposals for a number of buildings, including Fisk Hall, which opened in 1899. A focal point of the exhibit will be Burnham's comprehensive Campus Plan (1905). While the Plan of Northwestern was never implemented, Burnham's drawing reflects many of the features found in his other large-scale projects. [MORE]
