Worth His Salt: Joy Morton's Role in the 1909 Plan of Chicago

Today, Chicagoans remember Joy Morton as the man who sold salt and planted trees. Few realize the significant role he played in developing the 1909 Plan of Chicago. A long-time member of the Commercial Club of Chicago, Morton served on its Executive Committee, chaired its important committee on railway terminals, and joined other members of the Commercial Club in backing up the Plan’s rhetoric with his own money and influence.

Plan of Wilmette, 1922: Following in Burnham's Footsteps

Wilmette Historical Museum

As part of the regionwide, centennial celebration of Burnham's 1909 Plan of Chicago, this new exhibit examines the 1922 Plan of Wilmette. Following Burnham's work, Wilmette's Plan considered issues such as open spaces, zoning regulations, street lighting, and transportation, especially the idea of elevating the railroad tracks along Green Bay Road. Exhibit highlights include an original Plan drawing, a 1925 street lamp, and illustrations from the town's first community-wide plan.  Through December 2009. [MORE]

The City of Waukegan has developed a photopanel exhibit to showcase Waukegan's award-winning master plan, corresponding to the Centennial's program objectives to inspire and educate and initiate bold plans. The exhibit gives visitors a chance to experience the bold, expansive regional plan on several different scales, and showcase the future vision. ART + Science = Architecture

Adam Reed Tucker gives us all something to look up to. His towering interpretations of famous city landmarks aim to bring accessibility to architecture. Instead of using traditional materials- steel, brick, glass- to build is skyscrapers, Tucker opts for a more modets construction medium: LEGOs. Piece by piece, LEGO by LEGO, this trained architect creates large-scale artistic models of some of the most famous structure in America including Chicago's Willis Tower, St. Louis' Gateway Arch and Seattle's Space Needle. Burnham and Northwestern

The exhibit, which will include blueprints, sketches, manuscript and archival material, and photographs, will document Burnham's relationship with the University a few blocks from his Evanston home. Burnham received his first honorary degree here (1895), and his firm submitted proposals for a number of buildings, including Fisk Hall, which opened in 1899. A focal point of the exhibit will be Burnham's comprehensive Campus Plan (1905). While the Plan of Northwestern was never implemented, Burnham's drawing reflects many of the features found in his other large-scale projects. [MORE]

Envisioning Joliet: Burnham, Bennett, and Beyond

This exhibit provides insight into Daniel H. Burnham and Edward H. Bennett and touches on the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893, the buildings of D.H. Burnham & Company in Joliet, Burnham's 1909 Plan of Chicago, and Bennett's 1921 Plan of Joliet.

Today, planners and architects continue to improve the city and increase its livability by expanding on Bennett's plan. With preparations for new campaigns such as the VOA Associates' transit center, the spirit of Burnham and Bennett lives on in Joliet. [MORE]

Inspiring Dreams: Promoting the Burnham Plan

Daniel H. Burnham and Prairie Avenue

This exhibit will focus on the early career of Burnham & Root, beginning with the 1874 commission for the John Sherman house at 2100 S. Prairie Avenue. It was during the design and construction of this residence that Burnham met and married Sherman's daughter Margaret. Upon completion of the house, the Burnhams resided with the Shermans until the early 1880s.
